Hello again, I am back and I think that I am finally on track. Thanks to all the kind people that sent me messages and made comments on my first post. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to do that, and took an interest in what I wrote. Museum of Thieves is a Young Adult novel with a serious over tone to it. It follows the path that Goldie Roth takes in her town of Jewel. Here is a synopsis that is on the back cover:
“Welcome to the tyrannical city of Jewel, where impatience is a sin and boldness is a crime. Goldie Roth has lived in Jewel all her life. Like every child in the city, she wears a silver guardchain and is forced to obey the dreaded Blessed Guardians. She has never done anything by herself and won’t be allowed out on the streets unchained until Separation Day.
When Separation Day is cancelled, Goldie, who has always been both impatient and bold, runs away, risking not only her own life but also the lives of those she has left behind. In the chaos that follows, she is lured to the mysterious Museum of Dunt, where she meets the boy Toadspit and discovers terrible secrets. Only the cunning mind of a thief can understand the museum’s strange, shifting rooms. Fortunately, Goldie has a talent for thieving.”
I found it very easy to identify with Goldie right from the get go. Wearing an extra set of chains as punishment for being different is not fun. Would anyone like to be chained to someone all day then come bedtime chained to our bed? No, I think not. Lian Tanner’s novel is rich with symbolism, metaphors and much more. She uses these literary devices to her advantage to drive her point home and take us on a wonderful journey.
Museum of Thieves was a total surprise for me. I thought it was going to be a tired story that was copycat in too many ways to enjoy. Tanner’s vision, plotline , and commentary won me over to the point that I am going to suggest this novel. I must say I enjoyed it. Give it try.
